If you have recently gone to www.shrimptoncouture.com you probably noticed we tweaked out kanding page - its now a full page versionn of our weekly cover! We decided to do this so its a bit more of a BAM impression and gives it a magazine type feel. Plus its fun to showcase our covers in a more dramatic fashion!

Well makeovers must be in the air because I just got notice that our sponsor - theoutnet.com is also getting a tweak! Here is a sneak peek of their new look that will be unveiled tomorrow! Be sure to check it out!

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Rachel Griffiths

Another fab vintage spot - Rachel Griffiths wore Lanvin-Castillo to the MOCA’s Annual Gala “The Artist’s Museum Happening”.

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore, who is the main characters voice in the  Walt Disney World film, “Tangled”, attended the red carpet premiere  in LA last night. She wore this fabulous vintage Carolyne Roehm dress

Must Read Issue of Flare

Ok, Ok so I am biased - after all I am in one of the articles! The lovely people at Flare magazine asked me a few questions about vintage and the new trend towards a retro look and how to make it all work - see the full size version on the SC press page or just go buy the issue why don cha already xoxox

I saw this image on The Sartorialist and it caught my eye. The girl in the photo is obviously wearing a few vintage pieces (shoes for sure, fur scarf and dress a good bet) and even if that dress and scarf are not vintage, they easily could be. That's a late 40s, early fifties day dress whether its original or if its just a case of some designer that has taken full creative license and decided to do a full on copy - its vintage or vintage should-be.

I am sharing it with you though, NOT, because what she is wearing is all potentially vintage, but for the sheer fabuloushishness of the styling. The addition of that little bit of fur at the neck to offset the chill of a fall day and add some luxe to a day ensemble....the shoes that bring out the dot in that gorgeous dress. All good sound styling decisions, no?

But. The. Tights

To have the audacity, the genius, the sheer bravery, to throw on summer sky blue, tropical ocean blue, Bright, Bold, opaque, BLUE tights and combine those tights with that red dotted dress?!?! Genius! Whether you like it or not it is genius.

It's not a "pretty" outfit. It's an in-your-face, notice me, because I am kicking ass today outfit. Today, I will make my statement to the world today and my statement will be in blue - the world may then interpret that as you wish.

And for Scott to have caught this moment in front of the yellow can in the backdrop.

More genius.

Add your own dash of genius to an outfit today - I challenge you to do so - go forth and be a styling genius!

Coach and The Glamourai

Unless you somehow live under a rock you MUST know that Shrimpton Couture's own fabulous & talented designer extraordinaire Kelly Framel did a collaboration with Coach earlier this year. Her reign as one of the featured bloggers with them continues - check out this clip form their holiday campaign.

(Kelly has her own little in-shop boutique at Shrimpton - we are down to one piece left, BUT watch for a fantastic capsule collection of hand picked vintage pieces mixed with a SUPER exclusive mini collection of reworked pieces designed by Kelly - all launching SOON!)

On Wearing Head Pieces

I send two newsletters every week - one has is a styling newsletter to help give you all great ideas on how to wear your vintage and mix it in with your modern pieces, and the second is a glimpse of the new goodies that just landed in the shop.

Yesterday I sent the latter and in it I featured two feather headpieces that I have just acquired. This is it in case you are not on my mailing list (if you wanna be sign up here):

Pretty snazzy huh? And that Biba coat is not too bad either!

Just after I sent this off on its merry way I received an email from Angela who was kind enough to send some pictures of her and a friend with THEIR fabulous toppers on. Angela lives in Australia and went to the Melbourne Cup, which is a HUGE event in Australia and happily an event where hat wearing is tres mandatory - LOVE that!

These two headpieces are by the talented designer - Fiona Powel and they have the same feel as the two Dior/Stephen Jones pieces I showcased in my What's New email. I asked Angela if I could share her pics with all of you and happily she said YES!

Angela paired hers with the infamous Prada flower dress (that ironically I blogged about before - read that here - and I DO own that dress now btw!)

Angela's friend, Pauline, is wearing her fab feathers with a leopard Moschino dress.

Aren't they absolutely stunningly, lovely and glamorous? I love the combination of the prints with the feathers! And it is just fantastic to be able to see real life examples on how to wear a head piece and wear it well!

Thank you Angela for sending these in!

If you want to recreate your own look based on these lovelies - here are the floral print dresses I have in the shop and these are the animal print pieces! Those fantastic headpieces are here  and here!

Have fun styling!

Future Vintage?

One of the most anticipated collaborations in recent fashion history hit has finally hit the racks and girls world-wide went into simultaneous lust to one of the lucky girls who could grab some pieces. I speak of course of the awaited Lanvin collection for H&M. To add to the hype surrounding this collection, they  have made this video entitled "The Show" so you can see all the pieces in motion. Take a peek and then tell me - are these future vintage pieces or is it just retailing hype?

Celebrate Morton Myles!

My friend and collaborator with his fab in-shop Shrimpton Couture boutique - David Sheflin; is throwing a party to celebrate the career and work of American designer Morton Myles! Morton lept to fame as a young designer when Jackie O infamously wore his dress on the cover of LOOK magazine.

Funny because if you think if it, Morton is the equivalent of a modern day Thakoon or the myriad of other young designers that Michelle Obama has catapulted to fame by wearing their designs!

Myles began his career working under American greats, Larry Aldrich and Herbert Sondheim (a personal favorite designer of mine BTW). He also designed for Malcolm Charles - which was a division of Malcolm Starr, another favorite label of mine, so I am a little heartbroken I won't be there in person to meet him!

I have only had the privilege of selling one of his pieces so far but it was a beauty! It was actually one of his pieces that he designed while doing the Malcolm Charles label. You can see both his aesthetic in the cut of the dress, combined with the influence of the Malcolm Starr label with that vibrant print, check it out here. Maybe the fashion gods will align the universe and that lucky girl who snagged this dress so long ago happens to be near or live close to Phoenix and can attend wearing it. One never knows (but if it does happen you better damn well send me a picture cause I honestly just am throwing that out there lol)

Sadly I am WAY across the country (and in a whole different one if we are being technical) BUT both David has graciously allowed me to extend to all of my lovely readers and clients a special VIP invitation to go to the party in my stead! If you are nearby please do RSVP David your attendance (details below) and do pop by and say hello to David and Morton Myles for me.

And if you feel very brave and have had a champers or two - perhaps give Mr Myles a hug for me and tell him I said thank you for his contribution to fashion?

Stylist Lori Goldstein on "Schlumpy Chic"

I came across this video of uber stylist Lori Goldstein and thought I would share in case you have not seen it. She has a definitive style - Schlumpy Chic - is what she coins it but whether you like her style or not take what she says to heart. Be an individual, express yourself, let what you wear reflect who you are. More practical styling tips, buy what you love, buy quality and then mix it with low end pieces that can stand up well against the high end. Though for the sake of your wallets you may want to ignore the whole Birkin obsession thing - I personally just closed ny eyes when the camera panned across the shelves of those lovely, lovely little objects de art!

Sonia & Garance

Grance Dore has been delving more and more into the world of video and the results are astounding. These are all her content and the genius result of her and her team. I particularly love this one based on the Sonia Rykiel runway. I love Sonia - she is a true fashion icon and because of some odd twist of the Fashion Gods, she is coming to be on the radar of a whole new set of girls once again. For some of us, she has never left but it is nice to see her resurgence in popularity. She is just so perfectly French. This video makes me want to go to bed tonight with teeny tiny braids down right tot he tips of my hair so I can wake up tomorrow, shake those braids out and plop the perfect little hat over the ensuing mass of hair that would result. Tres tres bon

Remember my coat quest...

Well now I am screwed - cause I just saw THIS video on my friend & vintage collaborator David Shefflin`s Facebook page and I am in FULL ON - MUST OWN NOW  - LUST - LUST  - LUST.

May the vintage Gods help me

Cravings

Have recently developed this crazy craving for an over-the-top coat - feathers or piles of ruffles or something... not sure till I see it but I imagine me in something like this one in the picture above. Paired with heels (of course) and big ass sunnies. Les sigh - if only we had those replicator machines of the future that seemed to be the mainstay in the sci fi flicks of the past. I could just pop this picture in and BAM - out would come the coat, with any modifications specified of course.

The joy and despair of vintage is that when you see a picture of the perfect piece and develop a lust for said piece, you might find it tomorrow; it might be tucked in the depths of your closet already; or it might take years and years to find......even for a girl who has racks and racks like I do. The search never really ends for the truly fantastic pieces does it?

Wish me good vintage karma girls, that maybe, just maybe, I will find that elusive coat that I don't quite know what it looks like yet, but I will when I see it - this season!

Vintage on the Street

Was checking out the the on-line version of Bazaar and came across this fab pictorial chronicling Paris street style shot by Tamu McPherson, street style blogger of All the Pretty Birds, a blog that you will be hearing and seeing more of I am SURE as it is fantastic and I am quite enamored with it now. I pulled some of her shots to share with you - I pulled the ones that have a vintage twist to them so we can all steal some styling ideas form these gorgeous fashion girls!

 Angela Lindval

Printed maxis are a summer staple but this Ossie Clark dress with its long sleeves can  transition smoothly through to fall by pairing suede boots and bag to anchor it and contrast with the flowy feel. I love that she is wearing it for day - don't automatically categorize the past the knee pieces into evening - think outside the box and make a strong statement for day!

 Athena Calderone

Perfect illustration of how to rock a 50s cropped fur or faux fur depending on your preferences, Make it uber chic and modern by mixing classics like the little croc bag and Jackie O sunnies with forward piece like a sexy mini, tights and sky high platforms. Notice she used the elbow length sleeve to full advantage and stacked on gold pieces for a nice pop.

Julia Sarr-Jamois

Latest fashion darling Julia Sarr-Jamois always makes a string fashion statement and this ensemble is no exception. That little red leather jacket could easily be a thrift store find and  its a great example of how to work a piece that can easily look dated but using proper proportions and not being afraid of color. Her skirt is short but she keeps it on the fashion level with the slouchy sweater and knit tights - love this look!

Jamie Bochert

I cant say 100% that this dress is a 40 sweater dress but boy, if its a current piece, some designer is really looking to the past for their "inspiration" either way it shows how wonderfully these piece can work in a modern setting. Chunky Anne Demeulemeester buckle boots, opaque tights and a layers sweater coat that is just a touch longer make this retro dress completely chic and modern.

Lou Doillin

Remember this coat girls - I have a red plaid version posting soon that you will die for and your first thought will be to go back to this picture of it girl Lou to get styling ideas. She is chic and casual and has a "I just threw this over my fab LBD" feel. The coat adds some texture and depth to her black and grey ensemble and she completely achieves that cool girl understated glamor.

Tallula Harlech

I have a absolute love for Edwardian and Victorian tape lace pieces - the workmanship is extraordinary in them and a little nit of me is always devastated that for some reason lace is a fabric modern girls seem to shun. So I was delighted to see this elaborate lace piece on Tallulah. The stark hair, bold black platforms and tights contrast beautifully with the piece and she looks devastatingly edgy and modern.

Coco Rocha

Sitting Pretty

“My closet is full of a lot of vintage pieces, and everything is very random,” she says of choosing her own clothes for her sitting. “I have Tudor-era clothes mixed in with pieces from the 1920s and 1940s.”

Perspectives & Viewpoints

Someone sent this to me in a link and I was so impressed I had to pass it along (its copied verbatim and all the content below my little row of dots is Franca's opinion. I went shopping in Toronto on the weekend and went to some vintage shops and one in particular was beautifully curated but there was very little actual "vintage" present (using the definition of vintage being clothing that is 25 years or older). To be fair I have a fair bit on the site at the moment that is LESS then 25 years old, but its a result of pulling specifically for the FT 25th Anniversary Retrospective. I try very very hard to keep the site at about 90% true vintage and I would say that normally 90% of THAT 90% is seventies or older. So I am a little biased already towards agreeing with Franca's viewpoint. A good dress is a good dress but there is a certain magic that clothes up the the 70s have that newer ones just don't. And that is firmly MY opinion - you may have your own of course! This is from Italian Vogue's editor Franca Sozzani. Read it and tell me what you think on this subject......

Yesterday I talked about photography collections and vintage dresses. Today I want to elaborate on vintage fashion.

To go browsing on shops and flea markets
is special, different, not always branded, it can be unique and allow you to dress differently, it's fun, very stimulating and creative. To try not to conform to a totalitarian style and homogenous is a need that not everyone has but that certainly a lot of women and even men feel.

I had talked in a previous blog about how English girls dressed in a fun way by mixing everything together and not one them looks straight out of a store window. Mixing things by yourself is important and doing some searching is fundamental. Lets focus on the individual, its wardrobe, the desire to invent a style on your own. This is the good part of vintage.

Here comes the negative part. Many designers and you can definitely see it on the runways, go on a shopping spree to vintage stores and then use it to create the same clothes.

There are three lethal consequences
. Being bored by looking always at the past, the sensation to go back to school for a class on fashion history; the rising prices in vintage shops, the owners are aware of the trend and push the prices up on brands and beautiful pieces; it's very easy to reproduce this style when you have a big production, this inflates the prices of branded clothes.

The same years make a comeback periodically, for many seasons we had to go back to the horrible 80s, we were all hoping to forget, and then the 60s, 70s, 30s, 40s.

All of this is not good for fashion, it's true that inspiration can come from all the places, but the interpretation is up to the designers and their creativity. Vintage is so famous that many books have been written about it: from the Californian vintage, to the stars, to all the books related to each decade. Not to mention books on designers, past and contemporary. These are an endless source of inspiration, sometimes copied a hundred percent, make-up, hair, and all.

What's interesting about vintage is to see how the clothes are made, how they used to be manufactured, the fabrics, the mood
. To see a copy on a runway is intolerable, as much as I like seeing girls that mix things together.

It's incredible that now you can call vintage something you have seen two seasons ago. Last summer in L.A., in vintage stores, I've found only pieces that came from stock or in stores that put out sales. In the end, you never know who is copying who since the system is very fast.

Better to look at the future and invent. The past can only remain as a source of information. That's it.

Fashion and The Arts

Fashion has a long history of supporting the arts and they often intertwine. I personally love the arts and believe you should only hang and own original pieces in your home. Whether they cost tens of dollars or tens of thousands of dollars - a piece that someone has created is always better then one mass produced in my opinion.

So I am immensely proud to present the work of a young and upcoming artist who signs their work A+-ce.

Expect to see his pieces here on the blog since I have decided to personally help launch him into the world. You may purchase the pieces featured here directly. The PayPal link provided is to his account - this is not Shrimpton Couture purchase (though I will assist with getting pieces to you). His work is intricate and sometimes dark, but always interesting. This first piece is two panels that can be hung as painted - all the lines and curves match up and create the "third eye" or place them the other way, on the opposite sides to show the "monster" within.

Our new Stying emails!

Along with the assistance of Jenna, my uber talented graphics whiz & latest, greatest SC team member; I have been whipping up weekly styling emails every week. These are going out in addition to our weekly newsletter that gives you a peek at some of the items just landed in the shop and have a more editorial look and feel to them. (Maybe a SC mag one day, hmmmmm)

I am really happy with how they have come out lately so I though I would share the last few with you for those of you not on our mailing list.

I will post the new ones a day or two after they happen. If you want to see them fresh off the press you gotta go sign up. The real incentive to do just that is the ease factor - the ones you get in the newsletter are set up to link to each item featured - you just click on it and it will pop you direct to that piece. Here on the blog you have to go hunt on Shrimpton Couture for what you are looking for - since I am not as technically adept as Jenna is I am afraid you just get to see the pretty pictures :)

Dita Looks - Modern?

While she still  has a decidedly vintage feel, Dita Von Teese looked surprisingly modern when she attend Elie Saab show this season in Paris. Or perhaps it is that the whims and wiles of fashion have just finally caught up to the fact that retro with a twist IS the most modern way of dressing? Think Louis Vuitton and Dior (below) this season and tell me I am wrong. Perhaps its not Dita that has really tweaked her look so much but our ever changing fashion perception eye? Either way she looks especially fantastic in this shot and I suddenly feel the desire for a similar silhouette for fall......

Eva is Gorgeous in Dior

Dior is hitting it out of the park lately don;t you agree? Perhaps because the last few collections have a decidedly, vintage feel to them perhaps, hmmmm?

You cannot help but think back to the grand days of Hollywood when you see Eva Mendes in this Dior gown. Well played!

The FT 25 Videos!

I have all of these videos on Shrimpton Couture at the moment but thought I would post them up here as well. From the initial request to maybe do 12-15 outfits for the show, to ending up doing four sets and FORTY outfits in total, it all turned out to be a spectacular event! There were four sets in all and the entire collection is up on the site if you want to see any piece in particular. This show was SO much fun to do and it was an honor to have been asked to showcase 25 years worth of fashion in tandem with the Fashion Television Anniversary party!

Gorgeous Client Post - Sarah Nicole Prickett

Things have been a bit of a whirlwind with doing the Fashion Television's 25th Anniversary party Catwalk retrospective (items will be on the site tomorrow!!) AND doing some serious party hopping during TIFF - and I do owe you all some BIG posts on just those things but in the meantime .....

I have to show off the beautiful SNP, one of my fave writers and now an official Shrimpton girl. Last summer when she interviewed me for Fashion Magazine we got just a teeny bit off-topic and ended chatted about fashion - big surprise huh? She told me that she was on a bit of a paisley kick but it was hard to find good paisley pieces (that is becasue there are only four in total world wide I think lol). Always up to a challenge, I promised her on the spot that I would find her the most fantastic paisley dress she had ever seen.

The result?

A 1960s fully (and I do mean every square inch) sequined mini dress in black, turquoise and lilac, that in no way should work and yet it does. It is one of the four good paisley pieces in the whole wide entire world. Not only does it work, but it works on her and its F**ing fantastic on her.

Here it is under a leather jacket at London Fashion week and she has promised some more pics so you can see it in all its fabulisiousness

passing thoughts

Just a wild stab in the dark on this one, but I am guessing that Taylor Momsen ripped up, stomped on and then perhaps chewed and spit out, the recent flurry of fall fashion advise telling us that kitten heels are the new direction in shoes. Don't you agree?

Photobucket

The last days of summer

Are upon us and I am always a bit sad, even though I also look forward to fall and layers and boots! I was browsing about the web this morning in a moment of spare time and I saw this picture on The Sartorialist and had to share:

Photobucket

Doesn't this just capture all that is fabulous about summer in the city? And I love the slight 70s, retro vibe in the cut of her shorts. Its just enough to justify posting this pic on a blog about vintage! It just makes me happy to look at this picture.

If you happen to be in London...

Please pop by Selfridges for me Thursday and gawk-in-awe on my behalf at the Vivienne Westwood shoe exhibit. About 200 of the designers iconic shoes & boots will be on display, with pieces from both current collections and the archives. The exhibit will include what is perhaps one of THE most famous pairs of shoes in the entire world -  the pair worn by Naomi Campbell when she made her infamous catwalk fall and graceful (and adorably, giggly) recovery - setting a virtual "how-to" precedent for all future falling runway models. And the shoes are still f*cking fantastic even after all this time.

PS If you are just a fashionista baby and just went huh? Just hit the arrow....

The Glamourai & Liberace

I am always in awe of the style some people display as they go through life. Most of the time these people tend to be women for obvious reasons. Men are oft confined to a more 'suited" approach to life so their style range is quite narrow when you compare it to the glitz and glam and bling that woman can bring on.

So today when I popped over to the blog of Shrimpton's own The Glamourai designer extraordinaire (if you have not seen her work take a moment to jump to her in-shop boutique), I was floored by the pictorial of her recent visit to the Liberace museum in Vegas. I have vague memories of seeing Liberace as a child on TV here and there and remember him as being a bit of a poof of a man - big, glitzy, blingy, way out there. At the time it seemed rather silly and pompous, though I of course did not actually think that - it more the feeling I remember as I look back. Now however I look upon these pictures and while I still see big, glitzy bling, I also see hand-made, couture like, over blown FABULOSITY to a degree that in our fashion policed, watch out or you will land on the web pages of Go Fug Yourself or Perez Hilton, a degree of WAY over the top - in fact so over it there is no top, that I am quite enamored to say the least. I want a feather cape with a train and a Swarovski crystal covered Rolls Royce. I want a world where we wildly mix color and texture and say a resounding FU to "middle America sensibility"

Revel in these pics (scooped verbatim from Kelly's blog - read more of her fab musings here)and please take inspiration today when you venture out into the world - go forth and be glamorous!

{ never say goodbye } the legacy of liberace

as i mentioned yesterday, i had a game-changing, borderline-religious experience while visiting las vegas. no, i didn't get married. nor did i hit the jackpot. i didn't even go all fear & loathing. instead, i dragged my dear friend and vacation-mate cleo (who just started a blog!!), and our beleaguered boyfriends to the liberace museum. it was incredible.
for those of you who are not familiar with his legacy, liberace (pronounced liber-ah-chee) was a famous pianist, known for his over-the-top showmanship, a longstanding career on the vegas strip, and for being the highest paid entertainer in the world from the 1950s-70s.

from the looks of things, most of that money was reinvested into his wardrobe (a solid choice, in this case). apparently, he once single-handedly saved swarovski (the crystal company) from bankruptcy. an american hero, obviously:

but back to the museum. instead of being housed in a gaudy, glittering castle on the strip (as the lib's legacy so clearly deserves), it's nestled in some seedy suburban strip mall, next to the creepily-windowless good times bar (which offers 'recession specials' and opens at 8am! yikes.).

{ i wore: my most vegas-worthy, self-titled 'elvis sunnies' by devi kroell for vogue eyewear (last seen HERE), the glamourai necklace, s2vs shirt, betsey johnson dress, coach bag, lamb shoes }

luckily, this lousy locale belies the awe-inspiring splendor of what hides inside:

{ indeed, we have just seen a disco-ball rolls royce ("boy, it really stops traffic when i shop at safeway!"), a pink feather cape (with train!) and a swarovski crystal-encrusted piano with lucite lid & matching bench. OMG. }

perhaps my favorite thing about the self-described "one-man disneyland"? his intense dedication to finger-bling...

...though the details in all his attire were truly breathtaking. i mean:

like the man himself says in this video, "look me over! i didn't get dressed like this to go unnoticed." amen, mister.

if ever you find yourself visiting vegas, please make time for a trip to this hidden gem!
