passing thoughts

Just a wild stab in the dark on this one, but I am guessing that Taylor Momsen ripped up, stomped on and then perhaps chewed and spit out, the recent flurry of fall fashion advise telling us that kitten heels are the new direction in shoes. Don't you agree?

The last days of summer

Are upon us and I am always a bit sad, even though I also look forward to fall and layers and boots! I was browsing about the web this morning in a moment of spare time and I saw this picture on The Sartorialist and had to share:

Doesn't this just capture all that is fabulous about summer in the city? And I love the slight 70s, retro vibe in the cut of her shorts. Its just enough to justify posting this pic on a blog about vintage! It just makes me happy to look at this picture.

If you happen to be in London...

Please pop by Selfridges for me Thursday and gawk-in-awe on my behalf at the Vivienne Westwood shoe exhibit. About 200 of the designers iconic shoes & boots will be on display, with pieces from both current collections and the archives. The exhibit will include what is perhaps one of THE most famous pairs of shoes in the entire world -  the pair worn by Naomi Campbell when she made her infamous catwalk fall and graceful (and adorably, giggly) recovery - setting a virtual "how-to" precedent for all future falling runway models. And the shoes are still f*cking fantastic even after all this time.

PS If you are just a fashionista baby and just went huh? Just hit the arrow....

Kate Does Jackie

Katie Holmes is in Toronto filming The Kennedy's. Pics are starting to leak out of her in action like this one:

The Glamourai & Liberace

I am always in awe of the style some people display as they go through life. Most of the time these people tend to be women for obvious reasons. Men are oft confined to a more 'suited" approach to life so their style range is quite narrow when you compare it to the glitz and glam and bling that woman can bring on.

So today when I popped over to the blog of Shrimpton's own The Glamourai designer extraordinaire (if you have not seen her work take a moment to jump to her in-shop boutique), I was floored by the pictorial of her recent visit to the Liberace museum in Vegas. I have vague memories of seeing Liberace as a child on TV here and there and remember him as being a bit of a poof of a man - big, glitzy, blingy, way out there. At the time it seemed rather silly and pompous, though I of course did not actually think that - it more the feeling I remember as I look back. Now however I look upon these pictures and while I still see big, glitzy bling, I also see hand-made, couture like, over blown FABULOSITY to a degree that in our fashion policed, watch out or you will land on the web pages of Go Fug Yourself or Perez Hilton, a degree of WAY over the top - in fact so over it there is no top, that I am quite enamored to say the least. I want a feather cape with a train and a Swarovski crystal covered Rolls Royce. I want a world where we wildly mix color and texture and say a resounding FU to "middle America sensibility"

Revel in these pics (scooped verbatim from Kelly's blog - read more of her fab musings here)and please take inspiration today when you venture out into the world - go forth and be glamorous!

{ never say goodbye } the legacy of liberace

as i mentioned yesterday, i had a game-changing, borderline-religious experience while visiting las vegas. no, i didn't get married. nor did i hit the jackpot. i didn't even go all fear & loathing. instead, i dragged my dear friend and vacation-mate cleo (who just started a blog!!), and our beleaguered boyfriends to the liberace museum. it was incredible.
for those of you who are not familiar with his legacy, liberace (pronounced liber-ah-chee) was a famous pianist, known for his over-the-top showmanship, a longstanding career on the vegas strip, and for being the highest paid entertainer in the world from the 1950s-70s.

from the looks of things, most of that money was reinvested into his wardrobe (a solid choice, in this case). apparently, he once single-handedly saved swarovski (the crystal company) from bankruptcy. an american hero, obviously:

but back to the museum. instead of being housed in a gaudy, glittering castle on the strip (as the lib's legacy so clearly deserves), it's nestled in some seedy suburban strip mall, next to the creepily-windowless good times bar (which offers 'recession specials' and opens at 8am! yikes.).

{ i wore: my most vegas-worthy, self-titled 'elvis sunnies' by devi kroell for vogue eyewear (last seen HERE), the glamourai necklace, s2vs shirt, betsey johnson dress, coach bag, lamb shoes }

luckily, this lousy locale belies the awe-inspiring splendor of what hides inside:

{ indeed, we have just seen a disco-ball rolls royce ("boy, it really stops traffic when i shop at safeway!"), a pink feather cape (with train!) and a swarovski crystal-encrusted piano with lucite lid & matching bench. OMG. }

perhaps my favorite thing about the self-described "one-man disneyland"? his intense dedication to finger-bling...

...though the details in all his attire were truly breathtaking. i mean:

like the man himself says in this video, "look me over! i didn't get dressed like this to go unnoticed." amen, mister.

if ever you find yourself visiting vegas, please make time for a trip to this hidden gem!

A New addition at Shrimpton Couture

Every Wednesdays my team and I put together an email that features a sampling of the newest items posted that week at Shrimpton Couture. These have gotten progressively prettier since my right hand girl, Alex joined the team and then went up a notch from there now that we my newest and super talented graphic design intern, Jenn, who is a third year student form Ryerson! (Hurrah for talented youth!). Having Jenn, Alex, my other new & terrific intern, Jackie, this year has allowed me more time to plan out new features for you. One of the first we have added is a new email feature I have been dying to do for a while. A styling email!

The first one went out this week and features the fabulous photography of Rayan Ayash. My friend and uber stylist Nadia Pizzimenti styled the shoot this photo was from - the cover shot this week is also from that shoot! I am a lucky girl to have so many talented people around me! I hope you love this new weekly feature - if you are not on the mailing list you can sign up here

PS. I have tried hard to get a regular schedule going for new items. You can pretty much count on regular postings Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays now. That does not mean we might not slip in the occasional postings in between - fabulous items must go up when they arrive, but we are trying really hard to make sure new items go up on those days every week. New items are posted as they list on the right side bar here on the blog too!

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Drew Barrymore

Drew has made appearances on this blog before - I loved her in Grey Gardens and she certainly has done vintage on the red carpet a few times. I am always happy to post a "repeat" defender of vintage so here she is ain this at the Nylon and Express Denim Issue Party in West Hollywood.

Closet Envy

Seriously - this is one of the BEST closets I have ever seen. Meticulously organized and apparently covering, oh, a city block or so. I knew I loved her for a reason other then her love of vintage and her brilliant business acumen.

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Naya Rivera

Photobucket

Naya Rivera wears vintage to the Teen Choice awards and looks bang on! She kept it simple, just updating this classic bombshell look with modern heels and then just let the dress and her loveliness speak for themselves! Its a great example of how a fifties day dress can work for a glamorous night out on the town - or the red carpet - whichever applies to your life :)

PS. There will be further reductions on the sale items today and tomorrow and some will be removed from the site by the end of this week. Its truly now or never for some items!

The Vogue girls are on a Roll

Photobucket

Looks like all the Vogue girls are turning to vintage these days! First it was Giovanna Battaglia and now the stunning Anna Dello Russo! Here she wears a vintage Roberto Cavalli maxi to beat the heat. No one can escape the vintage allure it seems!

Its all in the details

Often the beauty of vintage is in the details and its not really necessary to do anything but look and enjoy
