Pink Fire Pointer February 2011

Our Paquin is featured in the 1st Dibs Oscar Special!

I was really excited to see that one of Stephanie's picks to dress the nominees was Shrimpton Couture's very own stunning, and extremely rare, beaded silk netting, numbered & labeled couture 1920s gown from the infamous Jeanne Paquin!

Paquin was the first lady to open her own fashion house way back in 1891. Definitely a girl ahead of her time! I think she would be delighted to think that one of her gowns was considered a potential to be worn to celebrate the achievement of a woman almost a hundred years later, don't you agree?

Did she plan to be this fabulously coordinated with her car?

Shrimpton favorite - blogger Susie of Style Bubble fame, steps into her Citroen car during London Fashion week. Susie is the type of girl who can show up, see her ride is covered in the most outlandish of patterns (green 60s wallpaper anyone?) and yet STILL somehow be perfectly, magically coordinated with it and will probably set off a flurry of designers to their color boards to prep Spring 2012 catwalk line-ups in a palette of pinks, teals and greens. I am so sure of it that next spring I will reference back to this picture as proof and do something silly if I am not right!

Me, I would be standing next to the car in some weird shade of chartreuse or yellow and look like a bad 70s kitchenette. Les sigh. Some girls are just magical like that.

I love this picture so had to share. And I love Susie - she has posted about Shrimpton Couture on several occasions for which I am eternally grateful. Her support has meant the world. She is and will be a fashion powerhouse and she is super super nice too. A refreshing combination.

Susie this is officially one of my favorite pictures ever!

I have one of the best crops of pretty vintage designer duds up on the site right now - its silly. And tomorrow, in conjunction with 1st Dibs, there is a whole slew of red carpet worthy gowns making their debut! Go peep and make sure to look again tomorrow! Only five more days till the biggest dress awards event of the year. Are you ready?

(For my Canadian girls - watch for Mondays National Post where I will be joining Nathalie Atkinson, National Post Style Editor and Cheryl Hickey, host of ET Canada, for our red carpet commentary.

And in case you missed it - here is the spread from the Post with our Globes commentary. Please feel free to curse me as you hold your computer in the air and turned about trying to read it at this angle. The boundaries of my technical abilities to get it on here any other way - well, let's say I not only hit the fence but my face still has odd criss cross marks on it......

celebrity vintage spot - mila kunis

mila is in a gorgeous spread in the la time magazine and one of the pictures show her in a delicious vintage dior - do you love? isn't it shocking just how cutting edge a dress some 50 odd years old can look with the right styling? ahhmazing.......

lesson: don't be afraid of velvet

As I trudge along life with one foot planted firmly in the past, I can't help but look to the runways to see what will work into my ever burgeoning vintage closets. I am a big proponent of mixing chic vintage pieces in with the best of what today's designers have to offer.

Designers of today are, after all, really just making the vintage of the future aren't they?

I don't normally have a little mini lust fest over a whole collection - usually, I spot one piece here, another there and diligently hunt them down to give my present wardrobe an update. I tend to buy mostly shoes (and more shoes and then an extra pair or two .....just in case......). My bag needs are pretty much met with my birkins and kelly's and it's hard to beat my vintage wardrobe. It's pretty fucking good, if I do say so myself.

However, I have to say I have fallen hard for the Jonathon Saunders Fall 2011 collection. I also have to admit I was like huh? when I first saw it.

JS is not a designer I even looked at twice in the past, so I was floored when I saw this collection.

I took these pics from The Sartorialist (cause they are better then any pictures I saw anywhere else - that Scott guy is good with a camera) and after swooning over them, jumped to Style.com to see what they had to say (and BTW, you can see the rest of the collection by following the style.com link)

"Jonathan Saunders' Fall collection started strict, with a belted mohair suit whose lines recalled the late thirties or early forties. That was the era when Paul Outerbridge was pioneering new techniques in color photography, using a complex process that produced intense, distilled images. Outerbridge is a kindred spirit, of sorts, for Saunders, whose mastery of his own medium's print process yielded spectacular results in his latest show. The designer had the photographer and his time in mind, hence the pencil-skirted silhouette, but the approach to color and pattern—bold even for Saunders—was, he claimed, also inspired by Outerbridge's graphic juxtapositions. That would explain the linear, geometric patterns at the start of the show. They mutated into abstract flora and fauna that crept up legs, across shoulders, down arms, like an exotic virus. Saunders' palette loaned the imagery a hyper-colored eeriness, much like that found in Outerbridge's photos.

But if his clothes were such a success, some credit was due the new rigor in Saunders' shapes. The sheaths with their side slits or the longer, languidly fitted dresses with hems flouncing out from under tiers of pleating made strong, sexy canvases for color and print. And it was surely significant that one of the most striking looks in the show was entirely print-free. It was a simple maroon skirt paired with a blouse that was jade green in front, dusty rose in back. Strict, yes, but oh so sensual."

Bold?
Yes

Fantastic?
YES!

On my buy list for fall 2011?
HELL YES!!

PS I just happened to be on Vogue.com right after writing this and there is a little write-up there on Jonathon's inspiration for the collection - this was written before the show. I found it interesting that he said his inspiration for his collection is based around his search for “a sophisticated, thirties-forties elegance.”

That must explain why I love it so much - he is a vintage boy at heart obviously!

Here are two more great pictures for you - the first is Jonathon fitting a model. I love seeing the designers at work and the second is his mood board. I bet all you smart-as-whips, vintage loving girls can rattle off most of his references within seconds - can't you?

New Season - New Look

We have been hard at work behind the scenes - to the detriment of all else it seems - including this blog. But at long last, I am thrilled to announce the accumulation of a efforts of Till, my fantastic, brilliant web developer; Jenn, my talented graphics genius who has a huge career ahead of her; and of course, my right hand girl, Alexandra, who is an official mini-me and my absolute go to girl! We have all been plotting and working and pushing to get the site to a different place. I wanted BIGGER pictures, a BETTER way for you to see everything in detail and LOTS of big visual impact on every page. I think we have funally gotten there and I hope you love it! And after just over two years with the new site, we tweaked our logo - I think the new look reflects where we have grown to and where we are going/ And the new tag line - well it just sums up what we do best. I hope you love the changes - please go take a peek, will you?

LOVE this

AND some alaia pieces are coming soon to you know where.........shhhhhhh

vintage at the sag

after a disappointing non-appearance of vintage on the red carpet at the golden globes, i was pretty pleased to see two pretty frocks make appearances at the sags.

dianna agron wore this stunning chanel dress. the workmanship even at the distance the photo causes is astounding. i am always a little wary when i see "vintage chanel" ....honestly half the time it turns out to be just a few years old....have any of you noticed that as well? either way its a fantastic dress

the other was worn by kyra sedgwick. kyra is a seriously overlooked style maven in my opinion.

her dress at the golden globes was my favorite - hands down. the color was sublime without being jarring, the cut was perfection, the fabric delicious...i just loved it and i thought the tiny pops of green were fantastic as well...... it is a dress that i would personally wear in a heartbeat so i am probably biased

kyra has worn vintage before, so i was not too shocked that she chose this stunning, vintage thierry mugler for the sags. it was a stark departure from the tangerine silk gown she wore above and she carried it equally well.

a column of black velvet with thierry's signature pointed bust line was fitted to perfection on her. (read this previous post on mugler  to see where this shape comes from .......can you see how this is a modification of the motorcycle handle bars used in that insane runway piece .........i die!)

I think she killed it. My only change would have been to do a stack of bracelets to add just a touch more pop. I am not a fan of the one single skinny bangle. A stack of those would have been killer!

vintage mugler is a favorite red carpet choice for celebs - check out how many i have covered here on this blog alone. his couture pieces are a no brainer for a high drama entrance ....... i wish i had some in the shop to show you some examples that you could scoop up for yourself, that when it does come in, it flies out in a heartbeat!

so now we wait for the oscar's .... wonder if we will see some vintage there as well? i hope so!

Lots of really special pieces just went up. Try not to die over some of the pricing. They are what they are, and at least I just put it out there as far as what items costs, unlike most dealers who make you email them to get the sometimes faint inducing truth. I never did like that practice. If something is going to cost $100 or $10,000 just own it ............or put it on layaway

*smile*

I have gotten a ton of compliments on the new covers and page toppers! I want to brag a bit about the people that made that happen if I may! Its all from a shoot done for Filler Magazine and the shots where styled by my friend - the talented stylist Nadia Pizzimenti (book her through Judy Inc if you are interested - you will spot lots of SC pieces in her on-line book at that site too). Nadia slugs all the way out to my studio whenever she can fit vintage into her shoots and does a fantastic job in blending the old and new in the most fabulous of ways! I love her work and I appreciate all her hard work. Luv you girl!

The photography was done by Felix Wong and the Creative Director on this shoot was Ryan Johnson. It just goes to show you that we have some seriously talented people right here in Toronto! If you really want to get an idea of how great this shot was - pop to the main landing page of the site - shrimptoncouture.com and check out Nadia's styling of a dramatic Anita Quansah neck piece with a blankey like cloak!

Hopefully we will see more from this shoot as I have asked for any pics not used in the main editorial - fingers crossed!
