Pink Fire Pointer March 2011

The secret is out!

SO excited about this upcoming collaboration with one of my favorite client duo's: Judy and Jane Aldridge. Judy is of course the beauty and brains behind Atlantis Home and Jane has the mega blog Sea of Shoes. Here is a sneak peek of Judy going through her closets to pull goodies for the shop!

Perusing the racks in our clothing storage room for our upcoming collaboration with Shrimpton Couture. Jane and I are cleaning our closets–again. We have decided to send some of our nicer pieces to one of my absolute favorite sites!! I’ll keep you posted on the details. I love Cherie’s site–the styling and photography are always gorgeous! It’s the perfect place to send some of our most treasured pieces.

Expect some great 80′s jackets….

Sequins too…

And some great blouses….

contrasts

in yesterday's post i showed you some original pictures from the 30s and 40s that were shot in black and white. i pointed out that you tend to think that the dresses in the pictures were black and white but that is not necessarily the case.

in direct contrast i can't resist posting this picture that is in full technicolor glory. same time period, but it gives you an idea of the exuberance of the fabrics that were being used. funny how a picture can give you a completely different outlook, isn't it?

yesterday portrayed woman as regal, statuesque, creatures that probably spoke with a soft accent and lived a cream colored world where everything was done for them. today we see a woman from that same time period who exudes warmth and quite, joyful confidence. she lives in a multi-color world and might even cook the occasional breakfast for someone (if she is really in love).

amazing how a shot of color can make a difference in perception.

Update:
One of my readers had that funny deja vu feeling when she saw this post and it was driving her nutty where she had seen the print on this dress before.... mystery solved! Go check out this post on her blog
I have been adding a ton of some of the best 1920s-1940s gowns I have ever had and there are more to come - let's just say I stumbled upon a really really fabulous source! In honor of these fabulous finds I had to share these recent pictures I have found of some gorgeous print gowns from the period.

I think because we see most images from these eras in black and white, we forget how brilliant the colors would have really been - just check out some recent gowns posted on my site and you will see that it certainly was not a B&W kind of world.

These images are a gorgeous array of stark black and white prints at first glance, but isn't it fun to imagine what brilliant colors these gowns are?

(check out the Shop by Era sections of the shop to see all the recent gowns posted and watch the shop today and tomorrow for more!)

guess who?

she is a shrimpton couture vintage icon! can you guess who this is?

no cheating if you have already seen the picture elsewhere :)

Good-bye Ms Taylor

There is no way to summarize a life this big in words written by someone who did not even know her.

Nothing I could say would really capture it.

You will be missed by all, loved ones and strangers like me, alike.

Head to head - who wins?

$1995

Pixie by Anita Quansah
available at Shrimpton Couture
$525

Not a bad head to head, especially when Anita's is the only one in the world like it!

I am very excited to share this gorgeous editorial that featured two pieces from the Shrimpton Couture racks!

Styled to the extreme with lace tights and pointed platforms, this editorial really shows how pieces that are probably older then most of the readers of this magazine, can still be relevant with the right modern twists!

Thanks to all the people who worked so hard in putting this together!

Cherie

sometimes my vintage is better travelled then i...

remember this pretty little scarf that jaunted around europe a few months ago.....

this month it plays double duty as a belt in the jungles of st. lucia

i can't wait to see where it (and grace) go next and how she styles it ........ she is obviously one of those girls who are innately fabulous!
Just to show that sometimes the original is as good (OK so I think better but I want to be fair here) as a relaunch - especially when the relaunch is REALLY staying true to the original and not trying to recreate the wheel..........

A couple of graphic print pieces from this season's Herve Leger collection just posted at Net-A-Porter.com

Asymmetric bandage dress
$1,590

 Geometric jacquard bandage dress
$1,950

gorgeousness right?

but I say these next two original pieces designed by Herve Leger himself stand the test of time and can go head to head with the ones above .....

1990s Dotted Herve Leger Bandage Dress
$1,250

Three Piece 1990s Dot & Stripe Herve Leger Set
$1,600
(shown with jacket above and with just the skirt and bandeau top below)

and I would bet you damn good money that the originals will continue to hold their value (and increase) as time goes by where the ones produced now will not. Pieces made and conceptualized by the original designer and produced on a smaller scale will win out and stand the test of time.

Buy vintage or buy the new - or both but know you have the option of either

how to be an individual

1. be a fabulous girl and dress how you want
2. be an original
3. remember -  quirky + eccentric, with a dash of bold = style

and

4. add vintage

Shala Monroque snapped by Tommy Ton of the Jak and Jil Blog, wearing earrings by Prada and a fantastic vintage bakelite cherry necklace
i have quite a few fantastic girls who buy from me on a regular basis, and are based in japan. and recently some pieces went to a museum in tokyo - the world is a very small place in some ways isn't it?

everyday i send thoughts & little prayers that those girls and their families are ok.

if you happen across this little blog today please send up an extra extra extra thought or prayer from all of us that love the past......send out wishes from every corner of the globe........ for japan to move towards a safe future

with love

I am really excited to share this video from 1969 with you. At about the 50 second mark, the full length version of the same Biba coat that we currently have posted in the shop, makes an appearance! I can't tell you how everyone on the SC team squealed, when we spotted it! It's like the holy grail of vintage fashion to be able to document pieces to this level and to actually see a piece moving and in action, in the original Biba shop!! Well.... it is just extraordinary!

Our shorter version is as mint as the day it was made and I am so so pleased to be able to have it for that lucky girl who will snatch it up - will it be you?

The rest of the clip is fantastic too, and a great little peep into the world of Biba past.
I hope you enjoy it!

Cherie

think this could have been the inspiration?

do you remember this cat and swallow print collection from miu miu last spring? i was obsessed and am still determined to get my hands on some of the pieces even though they are as scant as finding buried treasure and still are. i was drawn to it like nobodies business.....

well, let's just say my vintage diva spidey sense must have been tingling and sending out subliminal messages to me like crazy because at long last i have found the reason WHY i was so drawn to this collection. miuccia did a fantabulous job no doubt, but the vintage girl in my cannot help but wonder if perhaps she did not at some point see this piece from biba sometime somewhere?

if you think this is a new idea

these prada sunglasses are the coolest - i think they are crazy fabulous, and uber fashion forward girls like anna dello russo have already been spotted in them.

and i cannot resist posting the prada video that they appear in just in case you have not seen it - it is a little two minute miracle of creativity

they are just crazy and i am praying that a) i can get my hands on a pair and b) don't look like an idiot in them but rather some exotic butterfly like these gorgeous girls from the runwau do....

how can you not love??

BUT

If you think this kind of wild child eye maniac craziness is a whole new thing under the sun....uh uh oh ye babies of the new world. feast your peepers on these wild child of their days

(and this is just some of the craziness - if you have even nuttier vintage version send em to me and i will add em)
