A Shrimpton Vintage Spot! Elena!

My MOST favorite vintage spots to do are of clients so when Elena let me see this picture I was THRILLED! Elena hit the town looking devastatingly fabulous in her neck piece from The Glamourai proving that a very simple style recipe work

take fab sunglasses
Add basic black simple cut basics that flatter a girl
Then add pretty shoes & gorgeous classic frame bag
mix with one stand-out piece of jewelry
dash in a self confident "I know I look beautiful" stance and voila

gorgeousity!

Casadei Metallic Platform Pumps
In true R. Zoe tranny-form, my feet are right at home in these metallic Casadei Platform Pumps. The newest addition to my ever-expanding Casadei collection, these reflective shoes are perfect to pimp when you plan to dance the night away. Bear in mind, I hike in six-inch platforms :)

A perennial favorite, Casadei continues to land on the heels of my clients for their major moments both on and off the carpet. They are unique in their ability to apply luxurious materials to classic shapes, which gives almost any outfit a bit of WOW. Metallics appear every season in various forms. Today, think Saturday Night Fever—a disco ball in a shoe! Show these pumps off at night in a bandage dress, blazer and tights, but don't limit them to only after-dark. By day, I suggest wearing them with a harem pant or legging and a simple tee. Who doesn't need a little glitz in their step?

Flashback - Mia Farrow

Staggering Heights (and hello!)

Hi all! I'm Angela, owner of vintage clothing boutique in Des Moines Iowa, Dorothea's Closet Vintage and online shop, DOROTHEASCLOSETVINTAGE.COM. The delightful Cherie here at Shrimpton has asked to guest blog once in a while and so, aside from my regular-slash-sporadic blogging at REAL-VINTAGE, I'll pop in now and then to share some thoughts on vintage, modern fashion and vintage IN modern fashion now and then. Thanks Cherie! Here goes!

The long awaited September issue of Vogue confirms it.....the 1940s shoulder is back. With the 80s making a comeback recently as well, its easy to assume right off that this shoulder pad moment is brought to you by those who cannot stop Tivo'ing Dynasty (I'm talking to you, former visual merchandising co-worker at the department store who dressed every mannequin like Joan Collins at the Kentucky Derby!).

But there is more to this shoulder growth phenomenon than a longing to revisit ones youth. Unless of course you are 90.

Not only does the look actually mimic a more refined, sophisticated 40s noir startlet, there is another big difference between the 80s spin on the wide shoulder and the one we're seeing today....the shoes.

In the 1940s the wide shoulders were balanced by a chunky or wedge heel and the platform sole. To revisit my own recent blog about shoulder pads a tad, you can pretty much track the evolution of the wide shoulders to the beginning of WWII in the late 30s....certainly shoulders reached the maximum width while the women of America found themselves thrust into the workplace doing what were traditionally men's jobs. And as they stepped into that role, they stepped up their physical image with the platform. The epitome of which were the shoes designed for the starlets of the day by Salvatore Ferragamo. You can click the Ferragamos to get to a killer site, SHOE-ICONS to view the 40s section of a virtual shoe museum with serious drool-worthy shoes!

Oddly, the platform made its second appearance in the 70s, paired with nearly 30s inspired long, lean and feminine silhouettes. Worn by both women and men....at times more earthy than the 40s platforms, at times far more outrageous, the 70s platform is what comes to mind to most when speaking of platforms today. Picture links to Shoe-Icons 70s collection...

In the 80s the shoulders bulked back up but with the platform now being passe, this was not a direct re-issue of the 40s head to toe look....now the shoulders were not at all balanced out by footwear, rather the silhouette became that of an inverted triangle teetering on impossibly narrow stilettos. Its as if the polar opposite of the 70s silhouette with the weight of the silhouette at the base of a long, lean feather-light female form. The 80s saw the physical bulk of design sit at the shoulders (and upward into huge teased hair)!

This time we're seeing both 40s & 80s trends run concurrently....perhaps a tribute to a sane view of proportion. The wide shoulders remain more lady like, the waist still emphasized, the hips acknowledged as part of the feminine form. The platform returns, this time more subtle, concealed as part of the upper rather than an exaggerated stacked sole (a clever design setting today's shoe apart from platforms of the past, thank you CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN!). The heel is slowly bulking back up and getting away from the stiletto, the toe rounding to less of an extreme. While there are nods to the 80s, the 40s hold court here. This example is available at GOJANE.COM

So the next time someone laments the return of 80s fashion, you may want to gently remind them that the 80s were a return to 40s fashion...and this time we're mixing the best of both.

A Shrimpton + Norwegian Wood Collab Spot!

Beautiful blogger Nic, who authors the blog Vint Junky is a Shrimpton Couture client and snagged one of the pieces from the Norwegian Wood capsule collection the second it hit pre-order.

She sent me the link to her blog post today showing how she styled it
I have copied it in full for you - how gorgeous is she??

Fringe benefits

When the ever enlightening suzie posted that Angie of Norweigan Wood had been commissioned to produce some luxury pieces for the high-end vintage site Shrimpton couture i got over-excited. So over-excited infact that a few minutes and a lighter-bank balance later i had ordered a harness despite recent promises that impulse buys would be a thing of the past.

It arrived early this week and i've been superficially fawning over it's feathery fringed loveliness ever since.....

If you doubt your vintage is an investment...

..... then boy do I have news for you.

It can be worth SO much that its actually being forged like a Louis Vuitton bag

this story from WWD.com:

PUNK CLOTHING CASE SET FOR TRIAL: Three people accused of being involved with making and selling fake Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren punk-era clothing were bailed following a plea and case management hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court Tuesday, to appear at a trial fixed for May. Grant Champkins-Howard, Vesna Grandes-Howard and Lee Parker next year will face charges of possession of controlled articles for use in fraud, proceeds of crime and conspiracy to defraud, a spokesman for Southwark Crown Court said Wednesday. All three pleaded not guilty to those charges Tuesday. The trio is alleged to have made and sold clothing they claimed was made by McLaren and Westwood in the Seventies, during the time the designers ran the King’s Road store Sex, which was later named Seditionaries. Prior to initiating the court proceedings, police seized clothing from the defendants’ homes and from the auction houses Christie’s in London and Kerry Taylor Auctions.

Vintage Westwood pieces can fetch the moon and I bet it was one of the well trained eyes at those auction houses that busted them.

The nerve to knock off vintage!

I think proper punishment should be to put them in a vintage style jail
like from the 1800s
and to hold with the whole "clothing theme"
let's make sure their vintage jailers are well versed in "racks"

Spotted - Vera Wang

Wearing what else? But Vera Wang. Love this outfit!
What has she done? She looks amazing!!

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Alexa Chung

At The September Issue Premier

Real Life Vintage Spot - Kate!

The saddest thing about running a website is that I don't get to have that thrill of seeing a client slip on her perfect dress and start to twirl as she realizes how utterly fabulous she really looks! So when someone takes the time to send me a picture I cannot even begin to tell you how honoured I feel and how HAPPY it makes me.

A few weeks back Kate contacted me to ask about a dress and she narrowed her wish list down to this little silk organza one from the 1950s.

It has tons of details - a gathered bodice, double layer skirt, a pretty scooped and the fabric is to die. Its a good one - trust me!

So I packed it up and crossed my fingers and toes and not only did she love but she sent me pictures!! She said I can share so here is beautiful Kate in her Shrimpton Couture dress

Is she a stunner or what?
And Kate can I just say that the shoes you picked are TRES perfection!
Happy dances for you!

A Little Something New...

Beauty posts aren't normally our forte, but this one made it hard not to share with you!

BEST IN BEAUTY
The votes have been counted, and it’s official! These are the skin, hair, and makeup products nearly 5,000 readers, beauty pros, and Shape editors declared the year’s biggest winners.

These are some of our fave winners from the Shape beauty product winners...

FACIAL MOISTURIZERS
Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 ($15; at drugstores) Testers loved this product’s “totally natural-looking color” and “non-greasy” feel. Plus, the light-reflecting mica it contains helps even out skin tone, while the SPF 30 prevents future damage.
Clinique Comfort on Call Allergy Tested Relief Cream ($40; clinique.com) If your face is on the drier side and seems to react to anything you put on it, “this fragrance-free formula, with skin-calming jabara fruit extract, is for you,” says Shape editorial advisory board member and spa expert Mary Bemis.

FACIAL CLEANSERS
Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Facial Cleanser ($6; at drugstores) “The refreshing blast of grapefruit scent makes this a perfect morning pick-me-up,” said one tester. The potent cleanser also contains a blend of 2 percent salicylic acid and soothing botanicals. The result: clear pores, fewer breakouts, and skin that’s makeup- and oil-free (but never dry).
Aveda Enbrightenment Brightening Cleanser ($35; aveda.com) This creamy wash features the antioxidant vitamin C, exfoliating salicylic acid, and aloe vera extract to gently remove dead skin cells. “It’s even suitable for those with easily irritated skin,” says Shape editorial advisory board member and dermatologist Darrell S. Rigel, M.D.

SELF-TANNERS
Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer ($9; at drugstores) The usual complaints about self-tanners—too sticky, obvious, and smelly—didn’t come up once with our testers. “The foam imparts a believable ‘tan’ and blends easily,” says Bemis.
Victoria’s Secret Bare Bronze Gradual Tan Firming Body Moisturizer ($18; victoriassecret.com) This skin softener builds a subtle tint with continued use. “The caffeine in it also helps constrict bulging fat cells,” explains Shape editorial advisory board member and dermatologist Ruth Tedaldi, M.D.

FOUNDATION
Almay Pure Blends Makeup ($14; at drugstores) “My skin is very sensitive, so I don’t usually wear foundation—but this one was so light, I forgot I had it on,” said a tester. Made with 97 percent natural ingredients—including botanicals—this foundation is notable for what’s not in it: potentially irritating fragrances, parabens, and talc.
Bare Escentuals BareMinerals Hydrating Mineral Veil ($19; bareescentuals.com) This soothing powder features a combination of water, rice lipids, shea butter, and glycerin to hydrate skin sans shine. “It gave me a wonderful iridescent glow,” said a tester.

BLUSH AND BRONZER
Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin 2-in-1 Bronzer & Blush ($14; at drugstores) This two-part compact pairs perfectly coordinated shades of bronzer and blush that can be used solo or layered to create a sun-kissed glow. “It gave me a fresh flush,” said one tester. “And the color lasted so long, I didn’t even have to reapply before going out after work.”
MAC Mineralize Blush ($21; maccosmetics.com) Mineral blush is popular for providing lightweight, natural coverage, and this one is no exception. “It felt breathable, not like a thick coating of color, and it didn’t make my skin itch like some makeup can,” said one sensitive-skinned tester.

EYE MAKEUP
Maybelline The Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara ($7; at drugstores) For those times you want over-the-top-lush lashes in a hurry, this mascara truly delivers. “I’ve never seen my puny little lashes look so full!” raved a tester. It has a collagen-infused thickening formula and a brush big enough to cover every lash in a single stroke.
Exceptionnel de Chanel Intense Volume and Curl Mascara ($30; chanel.com) When it comes to creating dramatic evening eyes, it’s all about the wand. This innovative six-sided brush—with a mix of plastic comblike bristles to lengthen and define and tight nylon ones to add volume and curl—helps sculpt “faux-like lashes in seconds,” noted a staffer.

LIP COLOR
CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain ($7; at drugstores) Testers repeatedly commented on this long-lasting stain’s “fabulous texture.” “It felt like it wasn’t there—even though it stayed on throughout my entire lunch,” said one. The addition of conditioners, like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, ensures that lips will stay soft and hydrated.
Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in Caramel ($5; burtsbees.com) This all-natural lip color “is perfect for someone who likes a no-makeup look—but with a little something extra,” said one tester. Tedaldi adds, “the blend of sunflower oil, beeswax, and vitamin E in it is nourishing to the delicate skin on the lips.”
Shiseido Makeup Perfect Rouge ($25; nordstrom.com) With a selection of 20 colors—shown here in (from left to right) Ariel, Fuchsia, and Valentine—there’s something for everyone in this lipstick collection. But it’s not just the shade range that won over our testers. The formula contains a polymer that seals hydration into lips so they remain kissable all day. “My mouth still felt soft the morning after I took it off,” said one.

MOOD-BOOSTING FRAGRANCES
Halle by Halle Berry Eau de Parfum ($28 for 1 oz.; kohls.com) This spicy scent with a hint of fruit is suitable to wear every day. “It’s a rare fragrance because it’s strong enough to linger but doesn’t overpower,” said a tester.
Philosophy Unconditional Love Spray Fragrance ($40 for 1.7 oz.; philosophy.com) “This was the kind of perfume that had me smelling my wrists all day,” reported a tester. It contains sumptuous notes, like black currant and cashmere vanilla.
Elizabeth Arden Pretty Eau de Parfum Spray ($49 for 1.7 oz.; elizabetharden.com) “I usually find florals heavy, but this one strikes a balance between sweet and delicate,” said one tester. It features star jasmine, pink iris, and white peony, all anchored by a rich mix of musk, wood, and amber.
