Sonia & Garance

Grance Dore has been delving more and more into the world of video and the results are astounding. These are all her content and the genius result of her and her team. I particularly love this one based on the Sonia Rykiel runway. I love Sonia - she is a true fashion icon and because of some odd twist of the Fashion Gods, she is coming to be on the radar of a whole new set of girls once again. For some of us, she has never left but it is nice to see her resurgence in popularity. She is just so perfectly French. This video makes me want to go to bed tonight with teeny tiny braids down right tot he tips of my hair so I can wake up tomorrow, shake those braids out and plop the perfect little hat over the ensuing mass of hair that would result. Tres tres bon

Remember my coat quest...

Well now I am screwed - cause I just saw THIS video on my friend & vintage collaborator David Shefflin`s Facebook page and I am in FULL ON - MUST OWN NOW  - LUST - LUST  - LUST.

May the vintage Gods help me

Cravings

Have recently developed this crazy craving for an over-the-top coat - feathers or piles of ruffles or something... not sure till I see it but I imagine me in something like this one in the picture above. Paired with heels (of course) and big ass sunnies. Les sigh - if only we had those replicator machines of the future that seemed to be the mainstay in the sci fi flicks of the past. I could just pop this picture in and BAM - out would come the coat, with any modifications specified of course.

The joy and despair of vintage is that when you see a picture of the perfect piece and develop a lust for said piece, you might find it tomorrow; it might be tucked in the depths of your closet already; or it might take years and years to find......even for a girl who has racks and racks like I do. The search never really ends for the truly fantastic pieces does it?

Wish me good vintage karma girls, that maybe, just maybe, I will find that elusive coat that I don't quite know what it looks like yet, but I will when I see it - this season!

Vintage on the Street

Was checking out the the on-line version of Bazaar and came across this fab pictorial chronicling Paris street style shot by Tamu McPherson, street style blogger of All the Pretty Birds, a blog that you will be hearing and seeing more of I am SURE as it is fantastic and I am quite enamored with it now. I pulled some of her shots to share with you - I pulled the ones that have a vintage twist to them so we can all steal some styling ideas form these gorgeous fashion girls!

 Angela Lindval

Printed maxis are a summer staple but this Ossie Clark dress with its long sleeves can  transition smoothly through to fall by pairing suede boots and bag to anchor it and contrast with the flowy feel. I love that she is wearing it for day - don't automatically categorize the past the knee pieces into evening - think outside the box and make a strong statement for day!

 Athena Calderone

Perfect illustration of how to rock a 50s cropped fur or faux fur depending on your preferences, Make it uber chic and modern by mixing classics like the little croc bag and Jackie O sunnies with forward piece like a sexy mini, tights and sky high platforms. Notice she used the elbow length sleeve to full advantage and stacked on gold pieces for a nice pop.

Julia Sarr-Jamois

Latest fashion darling Julia Sarr-Jamois always makes a string fashion statement and this ensemble is no exception. That little red leather jacket could easily be a thrift store find and  its a great example of how to work a piece that can easily look dated but using proper proportions and not being afraid of color. Her skirt is short but she keeps it on the fashion level with the slouchy sweater and knit tights - love this look!

Jamie Bochert

I cant say 100% that this dress is a 40 sweater dress but boy, if its a current piece, some designer is really looking to the past for their "inspiration" either way it shows how wonderfully these piece can work in a modern setting. Chunky Anne Demeulemeester buckle boots, opaque tights and a layers sweater coat that is just a touch longer make this retro dress completely chic and modern.

Lou Doillin

Remember this coat girls - I have a red plaid version posting soon that you will die for and your first thought will be to go back to this picture of it girl Lou to get styling ideas. She is chic and casual and has a "I just threw this over my fab LBD" feel. The coat adds some texture and depth to her black and grey ensemble and she completely achieves that cool girl understated glamor.

Tallula Harlech

I have a absolute love for Edwardian and Victorian tape lace pieces - the workmanship is extraordinary in them and a little nit of me is always devastated that for some reason lace is a fabric modern girls seem to shun. So I was delighted to see this elaborate lace piece on Tallulah. The stark hair, bold black platforms and tights contrast beautifully with the piece and she looks devastatingly edgy and modern.

Sitting Pretty

“My closet is full of a lot of vintage pieces, and everything is very random,” she says of choosing her own clothes for her sitting. “I have Tudor-era clothes mixed in with pieces from the 1920s and 1940s.”

Perspectives & Viewpoints

Someone sent this to me in a link and I was so impressed I had to pass it along (its copied verbatim and all the content below my little row of dots is Franca's opinion. I went shopping in Toronto on the weekend and went to some vintage shops and one in particular was beautifully curated but there was very little actual "vintage" present (using the definition of vintage being clothing that is 25 years or older). To be fair I have a fair bit on the site at the moment that is LESS then 25 years old, but its a result of pulling specifically for the FT 25th Anniversary Retrospective. I try very very hard to keep the site at about 90% true vintage and I would say that normally 90% of THAT 90% is seventies or older. So I am a little biased already towards agreeing with Franca's viewpoint. A good dress is a good dress but there is a certain magic that clothes up the the 70s have that newer ones just don't. And that is firmly MY opinion - you may have your own of course! This is from Italian Vogue's editor Franca Sozzani. Read it and tell me what you think on this subject......

Yesterday I talked about photography collections and vintage dresses. Today I want to elaborate on vintage fashion.

To go browsing on shops and flea markets
is special, different, not always branded, it can be unique and allow you to dress differently, it's fun, very stimulating and creative. To try not to conform to a totalitarian style and homogenous is a need that not everyone has but that certainly a lot of women and even men feel.

I had talked in a previous blog about how English girls dressed in a fun way by mixing everything together and not one them looks straight out of a store window. Mixing things by yourself is important and doing some searching is fundamental. Lets focus on the individual, its wardrobe, the desire to invent a style on your own. This is the good part of vintage.

Here comes the negative part. Many designers and you can definitely see it on the runways, go on a shopping spree to vintage stores and then use it to create the same clothes.

There are three lethal consequences
. Being bored by looking always at the past, the sensation to go back to school for a class on fashion history; the rising prices in vintage shops, the owners are aware of the trend and push the prices up on brands and beautiful pieces; it's very easy to reproduce this style when you have a big production, this inflates the prices of branded clothes.

The same years make a comeback periodically, for many seasons we had to go back to the horrible 80s, we were all hoping to forget, and then the 60s, 70s, 30s, 40s.

All of this is not good for fashion, it's true that inspiration can come from all the places, but the interpretation is up to the designers and their creativity. Vintage is so famous that many books have been written about it: from the Californian vintage, to the stars, to all the books related to each decade. Not to mention books on designers, past and contemporary. These are an endless source of inspiration, sometimes copied a hundred percent, make-up, hair, and all.

What's interesting about vintage is to see how the clothes are made, how they used to be manufactured, the fabrics, the mood
. To see a copy on a runway is intolerable, as much as I like seeing girls that mix things together.

It's incredible that now you can call vintage something you have seen two seasons ago. Last summer in L.A., in vintage stores, I've found only pieces that came from stock or in stores that put out sales. In the end, you never know who is copying who since the system is very fast.

Better to look at the future and invent. The past can only remain as a source of information. That's it.

Fashion and The Arts

Fashion has a long history of supporting the arts and they often intertwine. I personally love the arts and believe you should only hang and own original pieces in your home. Whether they cost tens of dollars or tens of thousands of dollars - a piece that someone has created is always better then one mass produced in my opinion.

So I am immensely proud to present the work of a young and upcoming artist who signs their work A+-ce.

Expect to see his pieces here on the blog since I have decided to personally help launch him into the world. You may purchase the pieces featured here directly. The PayPal link provided is to his account - this is not Shrimpton Couture purchase (though I will assist with getting pieces to you). His work is intricate and sometimes dark, but always interesting. This first piece is two panels that can be hung as painted - all the lines and curves match up and create the "third eye" or place them the other way, on the opposite sides to show the "monster" within.

Our new Stying emails!

Along with the assistance of Jenna, my uber talented graphics whiz & latest, greatest SC team member; I have been whipping up weekly styling emails every week. These are going out in addition to our weekly newsletter that gives you a peek at some of the items just landed in the shop and have a more editorial look and feel to them. (Maybe a SC mag one day, hmmmmm)

I am really happy with how they have come out lately so I though I would share the last few with you for those of you not on our mailing list.

I will post the new ones a day or two after they happen. If you want to see them fresh off the press you gotta go sign up. The real incentive to do just that is the ease factor - the ones you get in the newsletter are set up to link to each item featured - you just click on it and it will pop you direct to that piece. Here on the blog you have to go hunt on Shrimpton Couture for what you are looking for - since I am not as technically adept as Jenna is I am afraid you just get to see the pretty pictures :)

Dita Looks - Modern?

While she still  has a decidedly vintage feel, Dita Von Teese looked surprisingly modern when she attend Elie Saab show this season in Paris. Or perhaps it is that the whims and wiles of fashion have just finally caught up to the fact that retro with a twist IS the most modern way of dressing? Think Louis Vuitton and Dior (below) this season and tell me I am wrong. Perhaps its not Dita that has really tweaked her look so much but our ever changing fashion perception eye? Either way she looks especially fantastic in this shot and I suddenly feel the desire for a similar silhouette for fall......

Eva is Gorgeous in Dior

Dior is hitting it out of the park lately don;t you agree? Perhaps because the last few collections have a decidedly, vintage feel to them perhaps, hmmmm?

You cannot help but think back to the grand days of Hollywood when you see Eva Mendes in this Dior gown. Well played!

The FT 25 Videos!

I have all of these videos on Shrimpton Couture at the moment but thought I would post them up here as well. From the initial request to maybe do 12-15 outfits for the show, to ending up doing four sets and FORTY outfits in total, it all turned out to be a spectacular event! There were four sets in all and the entire collection is up on the site if you want to see any piece in particular. This show was SO much fun to do and it was an honor to have been asked to showcase 25 years worth of fashion in tandem with the Fashion Television Anniversary party!
