SC Vintage Gets GLAMOURAI'ZED

The beautiful Kelly is the girl behind The Glamourai baubles & Frippery created exclusively for Shrimpton Couture (check out her lovelies here). But Kelly is also an avid vintage lover and a month or so ago snatched up this remarkable Birds of Prey 1970s Kimono dress

I have been watching her blog with an eagle eye to spot just how she would style this lovely beauty and sure enough it debuted a few nights ago at the YSL belle d'opium launch party!

The picture above is one you might have seen on Kelly's blog but she was a sweetie and sent me some insider pics! Enjoy!

With Krystal Simpson, What is Reality Anyway

And looking fabulous with Jeremy Scott!

Sometimes I just die for the places and parties my vintage gets to go!

Here's What I Know

A woman once told me that one of the secrets to a successful business was to realize that most people just want to be told what to do.

It was the reason (from a purely fashion point of view), she explained, that people hire stylists, read fashion magazines so they know what's in and what's out, wait list for yet another bag or shoe. Her list went on and on.

As I run my own little group of companies I tend to think she was right

however

I sometimes want to find her and over a nice cup of coffee,
let her know,
that in my experience

girls who wear vintage tend to be the ones doing the telling

TONS

of new items just up
seriously too many to re-post here,
but trust me they are worth the jump!
Go peek

how to research a dress. for example i have a blue oscar by oscar de la renta dress. trying to find out something aboutit. it is vintage, a gift

you can by all means email me pictures! I am happy to help! There are lots of online places to start too - The vintage fashion Guild has lots of info for example and they have a label resource that will help you narrow down the era it was made in. If you think you might have something special or very rare you can also email the company directly. I have done this many times and a lot of companies are happy to look in their archives. Not all but it does not hurt to try this sometimes, if the piece is numbered then you will get valuable info this way. If its from a R-T-W line then this si probably not the best place to start! But again - feel free to email and I will see if I can help!

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Soleil Moon Frye

Soleil Moon Frye in a stunning vintage Halston gown at the 9th Annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles. I love this color on her and think she was bang on to pair an understated shoe as to not compete with the vibrant color!

Well played!

Here's What I Know

People always ask me to divulge secrets - where do I get stuff? How do you find out about labels? How do I clean stuff......the questions are endless. I always have the best of intentions to sit down and post these long intellectual posts but then running my little empire (as I alone affectionately call it) gets in the way and well.....
I don't.

So I decided to just post little bits here and there as I think them up and decide they might have some relevance.

So here is one of the things I know

"Just because it has a label doesn't mean it can't be butt F(*&&)K ugly"

Every designer has made a mistake. I don't buy ugly (or try not too anyway) Don't you either. There is too much of it in the world already - why add to it?

That being said sometimes one persons ugly is anther's extremely collectible and worth a damn fortune. This has happened to me - I have turned down ugly only to find out it was some important piece in the designer's career and I could have retired to a beach house.

So if you are going to get into this business, or all yourself a collector, don't be an uneducated sot. It's hard to know it all, but try.
Try Hard.

And despite the lack of a beach house (yet) given the choice,
I still would error on the side of beauty

Is it Just me.....

...or is it odd to see January Jones in modern day garb?

Don't get me wrong - she is a stunner no matter the era but as a devout Mad Man fan I find myself and my world feeling strangely off kilter whenever I see her rocking a decidedly modern look like this one. I keep thinking Don Draper is going to have a heart attack as he rounds the corner of the same event and sees his wife wearing a teeny dress like this in public.

Oh the scandal of it
lol

Feeling Tropical Today!

and speaking of contests you might have noticed we added a couple more badges this week to our side bar! Every year Lulu's Vintage Blog awards a Peoples Choice for their favorite Vintage shops on-line and also has a Top Ten Vintage Shops On-line Award. I am very happy to tell you that we landed on both lists and that Shrimpton Couture topped the Top Ten list this year to grab the number one spot!

It's all due to my wonderful clients (that's you!), my fabulous buyers; Karen, Christine & Linda who are relentless in sourcing the best of the best, Alex who is my right hand girl and is always happy and eager to take on any challenge, the UBER talented designers who work with vintage to give it a new life - Kelly of the Glamourai, Christine who is behind RSVP, Angie of Norwegian Wood, Michelle who designs Simone's Rose VGL and the talented Anita of Anita Quansah, the interns who toil away on their own time, the gorgeous models - like Meghan, Emily, Eve, Alex & Ainsley to name just a few of the regulars, my uber fantastic web guy Emilio who puts up with my constant whip cracking and all the other people who help make the site what it is and My Guy - cause really - he is the one who has to put up with it ALL every day. GO BUY IT - cause your truly is in this issue!
Yep for real! I am part of a story running in the July issue!

Lisa Tant (Flare's editor-in-chief) posted a quote from the article on twitter yesterday and it ended up being a top tweet!

I am very excited - its a dream come true to land in a magazine I have read since I was a teenager! I am sure their sales will go up substantially just from ME alone and by that I mean I will probably clear out a magazine rack or two all by myself.
*wink*

Last but not least - I was asked to join 1st dibs a few months ago and have been mulling on whether to go ahead or not and I am pleased to announce that I have decided I am up to the challenge and will now be a part of their Vintage and Haute Couture section! Its a great honor as the dealers there are truly tops at what they do and I am really pleased to be joining that group!

and THAT is it

(for today anyway)

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Olivia Palermo

Vogue Uk gives us a daily does of "Today I am Wearing" featuring some of the current It girls. I saw this shot and had to share - Olivia is rocking a vintage Givenchy jacket. The irony is that the jacket is almost assuredly from a staid "ladies who lunch" suit. It serves to show you that its about three things sometimes - attitude, styling and a well-made timeless piece!

Love this outfit! Do you?
